Afterlife – Series 1 & 2 Box Set

October 20th, 2009

Afterlife

I remember when Afterlife was broadcast on Australian TV, it was around the time we also got Ghost Whisperer and Medium but after watching a couple of episodes of each of those shows and being rather unimpressed with both I just never bothered with Afterlife because I just assumed it would be more of the same – what a mistake that was.

Both series of the show came and went and it never entered my mind again until recently when I was looking for something cheap to pad out an order from Amazon and the series 1 and 2 boxset popped up and it was extremely cheap so I thought “what the hell”, it eventually arrived and then sat here unopened for a couple of months.

Well my wife is away in Sydney and I was looking for something to watch and I decided to watch an episode of Afterlife, two days later and I’ve watched both series and it was a fantastic show, in comparison both Ghost Whisperer and Medium now seem so watered down ( I’ve seen the odd episode here and there ) that I now doubt I could take either show even slightly seriously.

Afterlife was a show that told it’s story in the way the producers felt it needed to be told and they didn’t feel obligated to end every story with a feel good Hollywood style happy ending – fantastic stuff and it’s still pretty cheap on Amazon UK.

You could do far worse than this series if you enjoy a good supernatural TV series and if you are a fan of either Ghost Whisperer or Medium you should check the show out and you’ll be treated to a much more mature take on similar themes.

Gone But Not Forgotten: Surface

October 9th, 2009

Surface premiered on NBC in September 2005 and ran for 15 episodes which was a complete season. Surface went on hiatus with many other NBC shows due to coverage of the 2006 Winter Olympics. The show was officially cancelled in May.

Surface starter very slowly, VERY slowly. I had a real problem getting into the show because the pacing was off. I had more than one listener email me and encourage me to keep watching and I did. The story really came together around episode ten and the remaining episodes had some real momentum.

Surface had a tremendous cliff hanger ending. It would have been nice if the show had gotten the green light for a second season. The series is worth your time because the story will grab you (eventually). The characters are well developed early in the series which does explain why the story is slow in the beginning. The ending will leave you wanting more and once you realize there isn’t any more, that ‘want’ will turn to anger. The irony is that show had average ratings and if the network had had more faith in the show maybe it could have been a hit today.

Gone But Not Forgotten: The 4400

September 30th, 2009

This series ran on the USA network from 2004-2007. The series ender was supposed to be a season ender but season 5 was cancelled before it got started. The final episode wasn’t so much of a cliffhanger as it was a new chapter in the lives of the characters with some big changes for many of them.

I can live with how the show ended but I would have enjoyed seeing how the character’s story continued to unfold. This was a show that didn’t have a lot of effects and didn’t need them in order to tell the story effectively. I have trouble watching shows that have been cancelled because why invest time in an unfinished story? I don’t read half a book so why watch an unfinished series? The reason you should watch this is simple: this is a good story with compelling characters. Yes it ends rather unceremoniously but the ending won’t make you think that you wasted your time. The ending finishes off some story points and sets up for the next chapter (that never comes).

Give this show a try, you won’t be sorry.

Now if Shayne could just find some deals on the DVDs…

Life on Mars

September 30th, 2009

I was just looking online at the DVD boxset for the US version of Life on Mars, basically I was wondering if they were going to include the unaired pilot, I’ve seen it but I thought it’d make a nice extra for the DVD set – from what I can gather it’s not included which is a shame.

What I also discovered is that the region 1 version of the British ( and original ) version of Life on Mars seems to be insanely expensive – seriously at $50 plus for a season, how the hell do they justify that ?

If you are out for your Life on Mars fix apparently Amazon Uk is the place you need to get it from:

Life On Mars : Complete BBC Series 1 DVD £9.48

Life On Mars – Series 1 – Complete Blu-ray £9.48

Life on Mars : Complete BBC Series 2 DVD £9.48

Life On Mars – Series 2 – Complete Blu-ray £9.98

and just for good luck

Ashes to Ashes: Complete BBC Series 1 DVD £9.98
