Gone But Not Forgotten: Surface
Surface premiered on NBC in September 2005 and ran for 15 episodes which was a complete season. Surface went on hiatus with many other NBC shows due to coverage of the 2006 Winter Olympics. The show was officially cancelled in May.
Surface starter very slowly, VERY slowly. I had a real problem getting into the show because the pacing was off. I had more than one listener email me and encourage me to keep watching and I did. The story really came together around episode ten and the remaining episodes had some real momentum.
Surface had a tremendous cliff hanger ending. It would have been nice if the show had gotten the green light for a second season. The series is worth your time because the story will grab you (eventually). The characters are well developed early in the series which does explain why the story is slow in the beginning. The ending will leave you wanting more and once you realize there isn’t any more, that ‘want’ will turn to anger. The irony is that show had average ratings and if the network had had more faith in the show maybe it could have been a hit today.

Surface was a lot of fun, I re-watched this show a couple of months ago and I really enjoyed seeing it again.

It wasn’t the best of the three network scifi shows of that season and alas the abrupt cutoff really seals the unwatchability of the show, for me anyway.

That’s the problem with many of these shows. If I hadn’t seen it for $5, I wouldn’t have bothered. I feel like when they put an unfinished show on DVD, they should either make one more episode to finish it off, or if they don’t have the money, give us an insert or PDF file on the last DVD that shows the intended outline and/or conclusion of the show. I think too many of these shows weren’t planned out enough for the producers/writers to even know where it was going. That’s why BSG sucked at the end. They were writing it as they went along instead of having a plan. They say they planned out Lost. Hopefully that will show in the final season. If you are going to do a show that is episodic and have a mythology, you need to know where it is going!
